Kia Bailey’s journey to small business ownership began with a desire for a better work-life balance. As a solo mum to two young children and previously working long hours in a stressful job with a lengthy commute, Kia made the move to the Blue Mountains and decided it was time for a change. In the local Katoomba Centrelink, a yellow brochure for Sydney Business caught her attention. Initially skeptical about the level of support on offer, Kia soon discovered the opportunities that lay ahead through the Self-Employment Assistance program.

Drawing on 30 years of animal care experience, Kia established Upper Mountains Pet Services, offering a unique range of pet care solutions including mobile vet nursing, pet sitting, dog walking, microchipping, nail clipping, medication administration, and individualised pet sitting and daycare. As her own boss, Kia takes pride in delivering services that are tailored to each animal’s needs.

Kia completed the Accredited Small Business Training for the Certificate IV in Entrepreneurship and New Business, and participated in the 12-month Small Business Coaching program with Sydney Business. She found the theory component of the course both enjoyable and practical, with a supportive teacher who provided real-life examples and useful resources. Regular phone calls and advice for completing Quarterly Updates were also invaluable as she grew her business and skills.

Kia’s advice for others considering self-employment is honest and encouraging:

“It can feel intimidating at first, especially when moving from a career of wages and salaried work to self employment. After a small settling period I became more confident in my business management and financial skills.”
