Cyber Scare: how cyber aware is your small business?
The NSW Small Business Commissioner commissioned research on business attitudes and views of cybercrime. This is so that we can better inform government, industry and other stakeholders of cyber security awareness among small to medium-sized business owners in NSW.
The emergence of digital technology as a global, shared infrastructure has contributed to a growing risk of cyber security events or cybercrime. Cyber security events, previously unknown or rare in the 1990s, now occur globally, every second that an organisation operates online.
Around one in three small to medium-sized businesses in NSW have been victims of cybercrime, and it is rated by SMEs as the fifth biggest risks to their business.
Success Story: Introducing Sandra Knelie from Vinotopia
After a one year backpacking sabbatical around the world, Sandra Kneile decided she’d like to do something she was truly passionate about – good vino, beautiful things, being creative, working with great people and travelling to wonderful places.
Sandra’s brand management and marketing background at one of the largest global consumer goods companies, both in her native Germany and Sydney managing well known global brands, gave her an exceptional ability to understand consumers and sparked the creation of her brand ‘Vinotopia’, a giftware business focussing on beautiful wine gifts for wine lovers.
With the help of Sydney Business, Sandra developed a robust Business Plan and has continued to receive mentoring after commencing her business in September last year.
Vinotopia is based in the beachside town of Manly where Sandra designs and curates a beautiful high end selection of gift products and accessories for the passionate wine lover, made by artisans and small family owned businesses in Australia and around the world.
“Wine lovers are my kind of people – that’s why I love working on Vinotopia, because everything I design and source is with wine lovers in mind, it’s a fantastic feeling when customers squeal with delight when discovering some of my products.”
She also enjoys working with wineries on a variety of projects – one of her favourites was a custom branded and scented candles range for one of Australia’s first families of wine, De Bortoli, and their La Bohème label, where she brought in her expertise from managing the Airwick brand.
“I remember working on the proposal: I sat down with the perfumist and fragrance manager I work with, and together we tasted lots of delicious wine, sniffed lots of beautiful fragrances, and may have had a bit of cheese with the wine as well” Sandra smiles. “It was so much fun!”
Sandra also just started working on her first custom project with a popular German winery – back to her roots. “It’s brilliant – I can go home to visit Germany, work with the German Wine industry and tie in my love of wine with seeing my family”.
She has just completed her best month of sales yet and is excited about what the future holds for Vinotopia.
